Dr. Wang-Q Lim (Uni. Osnabrück) will give a talk in the AAG Oberseminar on May 3 on Edge Analysis and identification using the Continuous Shearlet Transform.
Abstract: It is well known that the continuous wavelet transform has the ability to
identify the set of singularities of a function. It was recently shown
that certain multidimensional generizations of the wavelet transform are
useful to capture additional information about the geometry of the
singularities.
In this talk, we show that the continuous shearlet transform allows
one to exactly identify the location and orientation of the edges of
planar objects. This provides the theoretical background for the
development of improved algorithms for edge detection and analysis.
If time is allowed, we also discuss some recent results (by Guo and
Labate) on edge analysis using 3D shearlets.

Abstract: Recently introduced multiscale directional representations such as the curvelet and shearlet systems have been shown to be particularly effective at characterizing edge discontinuities of planar regions. In this talk, we show that this approach can be generalized and extended to deal with general singularities not only in the plane but also in higher dimensions. Abstract: Solutions of certain PDEs and variational problems may be characterized by "a few significant degrees of freedom", and one may want to take advantage of this feature in order to design efficient numerical solutions. Examples of such situations are ubiquitous: adaptive solution of PDEs, degenerate PDEs for image processing, crack modelling and free-discontinuity problems, viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, digital signal coding/decoding, and compressed sensing. In this talk we focus on methods for the compressed solution of PDEs and we address three different topics.

Prof. Dr. Gabriele Steidl (Uni. Mannheim) will give Kolloquium talk on July 7 2010 on Operator Splittings in Image Processing.
Abstract: Operator splitting techniques were developed in the 60th for the efficient solution of linear systems of equations appearing in connection with the numerical solution of partial differential equations. More than 20 years later these methods were generalized to nonlinear, set-valued, monotone operators and were recently successfully applied in image precessing. After motivating why methods of convex analysis/non-smooth convex optimization are useful for many image restoration tasks we give a brief introduction into the relevant operator splitting techniques. We point out that for special functionals there exist equivalent derivations via averaged operatoren, (Bregman) proximal point methods or augmented Lagrangian methods. Then we present applications of operator splitting methods in direction-steered inpainting (interpolation) and for denoising of images corruped with non-additive noise (and possibly some blur) which appear for example in Synthetic Aperture Radar and electronic microscopy. Abstract: Following their introduction by Casazza and Kutyniok, tight fusion frames have been shown to be robust against additive noise and erasures and thus are well suited for applications in communications or compressed sensing. An important method for deriving fusion frames is the spectral tetris construction recently introduced by Casazza, Fickus, Mixon, Wang and Zhou. In this talk we will show how this tool can be used to construct fusion frames with desired properties, such as predetermined ranks of the projection operators or predetermined eigenvalues of the fusion frame operator.

Prof. Dr. Marcin Bownik (Uni. Oregon) gave Kolloquium talk on April 21 2010 on The Pythagorean Theorem for Orthogonal Projections.
Abstract: The Pythagorean Theorem should be known to everyone after completing elementary school. However, its generalization for orthogonal projections might not be widely known among professional mathematicians due to the fact that it was proved only a few years ago. This theorem characterizes diagonals of orthogonal projections in Hilbert spaces and it was shown in 2002 by Kadison. For finitely dimensional spaces this result is a consequence of a more general Schur-Horn Theorem characterizing diagonals of Hermitian matrices with prescribed eigenvalues. In the finite dimensional case diagonals of a projection are numbers between 0 and 1 summing up to an integer. However, the infinite dimensional case, though simple in formulation, is a much deeper result. Abstract: Dahlke, Steidl and Teschke recently introduced a continuous shearlet
transform for higher dimensions. In this talk we focus on such
(discrete) shearlet systems in 3D with compact support. We derive
sufficient conditions for so-called cone-adapted shearlet systems to
form a frame and provide explicit estimates for their frame bounds. If
time permits, we also discuss their sparse approximation properties
for representing functions which are C^2-smooth except on a C^2
discontinuity surface.

Abstract: A 50 year old problem in Engineering asks: Can we do signal reconstruction
without phase? This problem is fundamental to a number of questions in Engineering and Applied Mathematics including the famous "Cocktail Party Problem". We will look at the recent solution to this problem which relies on techniques from Hilbert space frame theory. The emphasis will be on the mathematics underlying the problem and the solution to the corresponding mathematical questions. No previous knowledge is required as all needed ideas will be developed in the talk.

Abstract: In this talk will discuss two recent topics in sparse recovery. Many types of real-world signals (e.g. sounds, images, video) can be viewed as an n-dimensional vector of real numbers, where usually n is really large, that is "compressible". Sparsity is a simple but effective model for many real-life signals. Compressed sensing (CS) concerns linear algebra and underdetermined linear equations with a sparsity constraint. First we will discuss compressed sensing and its applications in different area of mathematics, especially the possible connection to PDEs using finite elements. In the second part of this talk, we will consider the Kronecker product of matrices. We discuss different sparsity measures such as restricted isometry property (RIP), null space property (NSP), mutual incoherence, spark and their connections and how these measures behave in the case where the matrix is the Kronecker product of matrices. This talk will discuss two recent results in frame and fusion frame theory:
Frames have been a focus of study in the last two decades in applications where
redundancy plays a vital and useful role. However, although the notion of redundancy
is at the heart of frame theory, in the case of finite frames, no quantitative notion
has been established yet.
In the first part of this talk, we introduce and discuss a list of desiderata a
rationally defined quantitative notion of redundancy for a finite frame shall satisfy.
We then propose a notion of upper and lower redundancy which, in particular, satisfies
all properties advocated in the desiderata. This is joint work with Bernhard Bodmann and
Peter Casazza.
As technology progresses, signals and computational sensing equipment becomes
increasingly multidimensional. Sensors are being replaced by sensor arrays and
samples are being replaced by multidimensional measurements. Yet, modern signal
acquisition theory has not fully embraced the new computational sensing paradigm.
Fusion frames are recently emerged mathematical structures that can better capture
the richness of natural and man-made signals compared to classically used
representations.
In the second part of this talk, we will introduce the notion of fusion frames
and discuss several results on sparse recovery using fusion frame expansions in both
a worst-case and an average-case analysis framework. This is joint work with Petros
Boufounos and Holger Rauhut.

Abstract: Geometric knot theory is the study of geometric properties of space curves that derive from their topological knottedness. Perhaps the most famous result is the Fary/Milnor theorem relating total curvature to bridge number, but the field can be dated back to work of Pannwitz on quadrisecant lines for knots. There has been a surge of interest in geometric knot theory over the past 15 years, partly due to biophysical applications to the shapes of knotted polymers like DNA molecules. One interesting problem with some surprising answers asks for the shapes of knots and links tied tight in rope of fixed thickness. We will survey recent results on this so-called ropelength problem, as well as some new strengthened versions of the theorems of Pannwitz and Fary/Milnor. Dr. Felix Krahmer (University of Bonn) gave a talk in the AAG Oberseminar on Dec. 10 2009 on Lower Bounds for the Error Decay in One-Bit Quantization
Abstract: Several analog-to-digital conversion methods for bandlimited signals used in applications, such as \Sigma\Delta quantization schemes, employ coarse quantization coupled with oversampling. The standard mathematical model for the error analysis of such methods measures the performance of a given scheme by the rate at which the associated reconstruction error decays as a function of the oversampling ratio \lambda. It was recently shown that exponential accuracy of the form O(2^{-r\lambda}) can be achieved by appropriate one-bit Sigma-Delta modulation schemes. However, the best known achievable rate constants r differ significantly from the general information theoretic lower bounds. In particular, no lower bounds specific to one-bit quantization schemes were known. In this talk we show the first such lower bound for the error decay rate. Abstract: Subdision schemes generate curves or surfaces from discrete data by means of repeated local and stationary refinement of that data, based on very simple rules. The initial data can be scalar or vector valued and the vector components can represent multiple data or derivative information. Any investigation of approximation order or smoothness (in the sense of derivatives) of the resulting limit functions naturally leads to factorization properties of certain Laurent polynomials. While in one variable things are still quite simple and all reduces to a linear factor of the form 1+z, the multivariate situation becomes more exciting as now quotient ideals in the ring of Laurent polynomials are involved, a ring that is fundamentally different from the ring of polynomials. In this talk I want to introduce some of these less freightening than natural connections and point out some consequences of this nice connection between analysis and algebra. I shall discuss some mathematical questions arising from those imaging and inversion tasks, related to modelling, analysis, and numerical simulation. Moreover, I will highlight the interactive nature between the formulation of diagnostic targets and (to a lower extent) therapeutic strategies, and the formulation and solution of mathematical problems. Abstract: The first part of the talk focuses on the question of which conditions a function \psi needs to satisfy in order to qualify as a shearlet. By this we mean that it must be possible to represent any L^2-function f by sheared and scaled translates of \psi and that the decay rate of the shearlet coefficients gives precise information about the microlocal behavior of f. We show that essentially all that is needed for \psi to fulfill these requirements are sufficiently many anisotropic vanishing moments. In the second part we adress the problem of combining the shearlet concept with the concept of Multiresolution Analysis. Our approach is to construct 'shearlet scaling functions' which satisy a refinement relation adapted to the shearlet structure. This construction utilizes a novel kind of subdivision procedure. Examples of such situations are ubiquitous: adaptive solution of PDEs, degenerate PDEs for image processing, crack modelling and free-discontinuity problems, viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, digital signal coding/decoding, and compressed sensing. Abstract: The Pythagorean Theorem should be known to everyone after completing elementary school. However, its generalization for orthogonal projections might not be widely known among professional mathematicians due to the fact that it was proved only a few years ago. This theorem characterizes diagonals of orthogonal projections in Hilbert spaces and it was shown in 2002 by Kadison. For finitely dimensional spaces this result is a consequence of a more general Schur-Horn Theorem characterizing diagonals of Hermitian matrices with prescribed eigenvalues. In the finite dimensional case diagonals of a projection are numbers between 0 and 1 summing up to an integer. However, the infinite dimensional case, though simple in formulation, is a much deeper result. Abstract: Operator splitting techniques were developed in the 60th for the efficient solution of linear systems of equations appearing in connection with the numerical solution of partial differential equations. More than 20 years later these methods were generalized to nonlinear, set-valued, monotone operators and were recently successfully applied in image precessing. After motivating why methods of convex analysis/non-smooth convex optimization are useful for many image restoration tasks we give a brief introduction into the relevant operator splitting techniques. We point out that for special functionals there exist equivalent derivations via averaged operatoren, (Bregman) proximal point methods or augmented Lagrangian methods. Then we present applications of operator splitting methods in direction-steered inpainting (interpolation) and for denoising of images corruped with non-additive noise (and possibly some blur) which appear for example in Synthetic Aperture Radar and electronic microscopy. Sparsity is a simple but effective model for many real-life signals. Compressed sensing (CS) concerns linear algebra and underdetermined linear equations with a sparsity constraint. First we will discuss compressed sensing and its applications in different area of mathematics, especially the possible connection to PDEs using finite elements. In the second part of this talk, we will consider the Kronecker product of matrices. We discuss different sparsity measures such as restricted isometry property (RIP), null space property (NSP), mutual incoherence, spark and their connections and how these measures behave in the case where the matrix is the Kronecker product of matrices. This talk will discuss two recent results in frame and fusion frame theory:
Frames have been a focus of study in the last two decades in applications where
redundancy plays a vital and useful role. However, although the notion of redundancy
is at the heart of frame theory, in the case of finite frames, no quantitative notion
has been established yet.
In the first part of this talk, we introduce and discuss a list of desiderata a
rationally defined quantitative notion of redundancy for a finite frame shall satisfy.
We then propose a notion of upper and lower redundancy which, in particular, satisfies
all properties advocated in the desiderata. This is joint work with Bernhard Bodmann and
Peter Casazza.
As technology progresses, signals and computational sensing equipment becomes
increasingly multidimensional. Sensors are being replaced by sensor arrays and
samples are being replaced by multidimensional measurements. Yet, modern signal
acquisition theory has not fully embraced the new computational sensing paradigm.
Fusion frames are recently emerged mathematical structures that can better capture
the richness of natural and man-made signals compared to classically used
representations.
In the second part of this talk, we will introduce the notion of fusion frames
and discuss several results on sparse recovery using fusion frame expansions in both
a worst-case and an average-case analysis framework. This is joint work with Petros
Boufounos and Holger Rauhut.

As technology progresses, signals and computational sensing equipment becomes
increasingly multidimensional. Sensors are being replaced by sensor arrays and
samples are being replaced by multidimensional measurements. Yet, modern signal
acquisition theory has not fully embraced the new computational sensing paradigm.
Fusion frames are recently emerged mathematical structures that can better capture
the richness of natural and man-made signals compared to classically used
representations.
In the second part of this talk, we will introduce the notion of fusion frames
and discuss several results on sparse recovery using fusion frame expansions in both
a worst-case and an average-case analysis framework. This is joint work with Petros
Boufounos and Holger Rauhut.

Abstract: Recently introduced multiscale directional representations such as the curvelet and shearlet systems have been shown to be particularly effective at characterizing edge discontinuities of planar regions. In this talk, we show that this approach can be generalized and extended to deal with general singularities not only in the plane but also in higher dimensions. Prof. Dr. John M. Sullivan (Technische Universität Berlin) gave Kolloquium talk on Dec. 16 2009 on Geometric Knot Theory.
Abstract: Geometric knot theory is the study of geometric properties of space curves that derive from their topological knottedness. Perhaps the most famous result is the Fary/Milnor theorem relating total curvature to bridge number, but the field can be dated back to work of Pannwitz on quadrisecant lines for knots. There has been a surge of interest in geometric knot theory over the past 15 years, partly due to biophysical applications to the shapes of knotted polymers like DNA molecules. One interesting problem with some surprising answers asks for the shapes of knots and links tied tight in rope of fixed thickness. We will survey recent results on this so-called ropelength problem, as well as some new strengthened versions of the theorems of Pannwitz and Fary/Milnor. Abstract: Several analog-to-digital conversion methods for bandlimited signals used in applications, such as \Sigma\Delta quantization schemes, employ coarse quantization coupled with oversampling. The standard mathematical model for the error analysis of such methods measures the performance of a given scheme by the rate at which the associated reconstruction error decays as a function of the oversampling ratio \lambda. It was recently shown that exponential accuracy of the form O(2^{-r\lambda}) can be achieved by appropriate one-bit Sigma-Delta modulation schemes. However, the best known achievable rate constants r differ significantly from the general information theoretic lower bounds. In particular, no lower bounds specific to one-bit quantization schemes were known. In this talk we show the first such lower bound for the error decay rate. Abstract: Subdision schemes generate curves or surfaces from discrete data by means of repeated local and stationary refinement of that data, based on very simple rules. The initial data can be scalar or vector valued and the vector components can represent multiple data or derivative information. Any investigation of approximation order or smoothness (in the sense of derivatives) of the resulting limit functions naturally leads to factorization properties of certain Laurent polynomials. While in one variable things are still quite simple and all reduces to a linear factor of the form 1+z, the multivariate situation becomes more exciting as now quotient ideals in the ring of Laurent polynomials are involved, a ring that is fundamentally different from the ring of polynomials. In this talk I want to introduce some of these less freightening than natural connections and point out some consequences of this nice connection between analysis and algebra. Abstract: In this talk I will discuss some aspects in the interplay of mathematics and medicine with particular focus on two examples from cardiology: (i) The quantitative diagnosis of perfusion with PET techniques, (ii) the characterization and therapy of cardiac arrythmias using ECGI techniques. I shall discuss some mathematical questions arising from those imaging and inversion tasks, related to modelling, analysis, and numerical simulation. Moreover, I will highlight the interactive nature between the formulation of diagnostic targets and (to a lower extent) therapeutic strategies, and the formulation and solution of mathematical problems. This work is based on several collaborations with and data from the University Hospital Muenster and the European Institute for Molecular Imaging, Muenster. Abstract: The first part of the talk focuses on the question of which conditions a function \psi needs to satisfy in order to qualify as a shearlet. By this we mean that it must be possible to represent any L^2-function f by sheared and scaled translates of \psi and that the decay rate of the shearlet coefficients gives precise information about the microlocal behavior of f. We show that essentially all that is needed for \psi to fulfill these requirements are sufficiently many anisotropic vanishing moments. In the second part we adress the problem of combining the shearlet concept with the concept of Multiresolution Analysis. Our approach is to construct 'shearlet scaling functions' which satisy a refinement relation adapted to the shearlet structure. This construction utilizes a novel kind of subdivision procedure.
